Mathematics

Purpose of Study
Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
INTENT
The intent of our mathematics curriculum at Whitechapel Primary School is to design a curriculum which is accessible to all and will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement, with particular emphasis on recovery lessons from previous academic years. We deliver lessons that are creative and engaging. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We intend for our pupils to be able to seamlessly apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects. We want children to realise that mathematics has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. We want them to know that it is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. As our pupils’ progress, we intend for them to be able to understand the world around them, have the ability to reason mathematically and logically in a given situation, have an appreciation of the importance and power of mathematics in a technologically-adept world, and also have a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
IMPLEMENTATION
Basic Maths skills are taught daily, following Small Steps from White Rose Maths. A range of reasoning resources are used to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to reason with their understanding. Immediate interventions are used to support children to ensure children are ready |
IMPACT
As a result of Maths teaching at Whitechapel, you will see:
• Engaged children who are challenged. • The closing of gaps via the recovery curriculum. • Quick recall of facts and procedures.
• The flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics.
• The perseverance and resilience to solve problems in non-routine ways. • Lessons that use a variety of resources to support learning.
• White Rose Premium resources are used to vary fluency, enhance reasoning and provide opportunities to problem solve.
• The mastering of skills as the pupils can show a concept in different ways, using mathematical language to explain their ideas and independently applying the concept to new problems in unfamiliar situations. • The ability to recognise relationships and make connections in mathematics.
• Pupils will leave Whitechapel as competent and confident mathematicians, ready for the next stage of their education.
