Intent

In EYFS at Whitechapel Church of England Primary School, it is our intention to deliver a high-quality curriculum which is ambitious and inspires pupils to succeed in all they do. Our curriculum is driven by our aspirations for all our children. Through our curriculum, children develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding which enables them to become lifelong learners, making a positive contribution to society and understanding the impact they can have. They begin their reception year by learning about themselves. This supports children over the first few weeks to develop their sense of self before moving on to further topics such as learning about celebrations and being able to compare these with their own experiences. Through the Spring term, children have the opportunity to learn about different parts of the world leading on to travel and transport from both present and past. Children learn about transport from the past in the Summer term when they have a better understanding of time and are able to make comparisons.

Implementation

Clear long-term planning has been produced for the EYFS curriculum including skills mapping which ensures coverage of the statutory EYFS guidance. Therefore, all staff in EYFS have a clear understanding of the progression of child development alongside, what the children already know and they will go on to learn next. The majority of the curriculum in taught through topics and have a ‘hook’ to engage and excite children.

We take children from a wide range of settings, sometimes up to 18 pre school settings and with some children never having attended an educational setting previously. We have children from a range of backgrounds from affluent to disadvantaged and within these groups we have a wide range of different starting points, skills and core experiences to build upon. In order to meet the needs of our children and community, we have a strong focus on certain areas within the curriculum including:.

-          Language development

-          Physical development

-          Personal, social, emotional development

-          Looking after our world

Impact

Pupils leave the EYFS with strong foundations for learning and a wide skillset which will support them to become lifelong learners as they move into KS1. They leave us as curious, respectful, thoughtful, resilient and ambitious children who are ready for the next stage of their education.
