Purpose of Study
Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.
INTENT
At our school, we believe that Design and Technology inspires creativity, curiosity, and innovation. We aim to provide all children with opportunities to become confident designers, makers, and problem-solvers by engaging them in practical, hands-on learning experiences. Our curriculum develops children's knowledge, skills, and understanding through purposeful projects that encourage them to design, make, evaluate, and improve products to meet real-life needs.
We want our pupils to develop resilience, independence, and perseverance while learning that mistakes are a valuable part of the design process. By drawing on knowledge from science, mathematics, computing, and art, children learn to make informed decisions, use a range of materials and tools safely, and understand how design and technology have shaped the world around them. We also promote healthy lifestyles through food and nutrition education and encourage children to consider sustainability and the environmental impact of their choices.
IMPLEMENTATION
Design and Technology is taught through a carefully planned, progressive curriculum that builds knowledge and skills from the Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 6. Learning is sequenced to ensure that children revisit and build upon prior knowledge while developing increasing confidence and technical expertise.
Each unit follows the design process of:
- Investigating and evaluating existing products
- Designing for a specific purpose and user
- Developing practical making skills using appropriate tools, materials, and techniques
- Testing and evaluating finished products
- Reflecting on and improving designs
Children experience a broad range of design and technology disciplines, including:
- Mechanisms
- Structures
- Textiles
- Food and nutrition
- Electrical systems
- Digital and mechanical control where appropriate
Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to work independently and collaboratively, communicate their ideas effectively, and develop practical skills in a safe and supportive environment. Teachers use high-quality questioning, demonstrations, and assessment to ensure all pupils are challenged and supported to achieve success.
IMPACT
By the time children leave our school, they have developed the knowledge, skills, and confidence to approach design challenges creatively and independently. They understand the iterative nature of design and are able to evaluate products critically, explaining how they can be improved.
