Purpose of Study

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

INTENT

At Whitechapel Church of England Primary School, it is our intention to deliver a high-quality art, craft and design curriculum which engages, inspires and challenges pupils. The art curriculum will give pupils the opportunity to express themselves by inventing and creating their own works of art, craft and design.

IMPLEMENTATION

Reception children have regular opportunities to engage with Art through exploration and play with a wide range of media and materials. This runs alongside teacher led Art lessons throughout the year.

From years 1 to 6 Art and design are implemented through a series of practical, hands on lessons every half term. Pupils draw on the work of others as inspiration for developing specific techniques which include; drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and use of textiles. The curriculum allows the pupils to build on prior knowledge and skills and provides opportunities to apply these in a range of contexts.

IMPACT

At Whitechapel Church of England Primary School through a high-quality Art and design curriculum, pupils will have the knowledge, understanding, skills and a love of art which will enable them to grow as creative individuals ready for their next stage in learning.
